It can be hard to feel grateful when you are going through a difficult time, when you feel trapped in a life that is not the way that you want it to be. Thinking positively is not necessarily something that comes naturally. It is much more commonplace to look for what’s wrong and what needs to be fixed. But feeling gratitude is the key to moving things in the direction you want them to go.
Finding gratitude
I remember when I started hearing the message that it was important to focus on gratitude if I wanted to start feeling happy. It was not what I wanted to hear. I was in pain and frustration; I was not in a place to feel happy and grateful for things that I didn’t know how to change. It felt false to pretend that I was happy when I was not.
But I also had that knowing deep down inside that there was truth in this message about gratitude. Feeling gratitude for what was good in my life would start to retrain my brain to see the good and focus on it. It would point me in the direction that I wanted to go.
What I didn’t realize was that I was hurting myself by continuing to focus on what wasn’t working — focusing on the problem was not bringing me the solution. I was not a car to be fixed. I was a human being longing to feel love and joy in my heart. When it comes to the heart, you need to plant the seed of what you want so that it can grow. It’s a movement toward what you want, with a loving acceptance of where you are, that has the power to change your life.
So, if you also struggle with feeling gratitude, I’ve recorded a short meditation for you to practice with. Return to it as often as you like. Then watch for how your practice blossoms into your everyday life.
